The Slowing down...of......the.......net..............(connection timed out)

We start to realise the World Wide Web is finite.

David Smith in the Observer comments on the possibility of the internet slowing down, due to the vast amount of traffic literally clogging up the ‘information super highway’ (there’s a 1990’s term if there ever was one).

We hear a lot about this being a possibility, but it wouldn’t be that surprising if it did take place. With the rise of mainstream media outlets offering their services online, vloggers, downloadable movies (legally or illegally) and ever more file-sharing websites, the sheer amount of data is huge.

Above, the internet, apparently. (Source: Wikipedia).

Some interesting statistics from the article:

-The world generates an equivalent amount of digital information everyday as exists in the Library of Congress one hundred times every day. (I’m betting the congressional library is more useful though).

-Downloading a TV show for half an hour takes up more bandwidth than receiving 200 emails every day, for 365 days (that’s 73,000 emails).

-One high definition movie equals downloading 2,300 songs from itunes. If you did the latter all as single songs, it would cost you £1,817.
